特殊事蹟:

S. David Wu, Ph.D., was appointed as Baruch College’s eighth president in 2020. He was selected by a unanimous vote of the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York (CUNY) following a nationwide search, becoming the first Asian American to lead a CUNY college since its establishment in 1847.

Dr. Wu joined Baruch at an auspicious time as the College was developing new and responsive programs for teaching, research, and student support following the big reset—brought about by the pandemic and the reckoning that has challenged racial and social prejudices. He believes that by providing affordable access to high-caliber education for people from all backgrounds and social classes, especially those in underserved communities, Baruch can pioneer and expand ways of producing the talent needed for today’s innovation economy.

Under his leadership, President Wu has led Baruch to significant growth amidst a national backdrop of declining enrollments. Since 2021, Baruch has enjoyed a 26% surge in applications and a 12% increase in student enrollment to nearly 20,000, standing as a testament to the transformative power of top-quality higher education accessible to the average citizen. The Wall Street Journal's 2023 ranking underscores this achievement by naming Baruch as the best value of all universities in the United States. In 2024,The New York Times called out Baruch College as a “model college” and a symbol of academic rigor and accessibility—an“Upward Mobility Machine.”

In March 2024, the New York State Senate recognized President Wu on the Senate floor as a true champion of opportunity, excellence, and transformative outcomes.

Dr. Wu brings to Baruch a track record of bold and visionary leadership. From 2014 until his appointment at Baruch, he served as provost and executive vice president of George Mason University. Under his leadership, the university experienced historic growth in innovative academic programs, increased student diversity and academic outcomes, and emerged as the youngest university to earn a Carnegie Research 1 (R1) designation. Previously, Dr. Wu was dean and the Iacocca Professor of Engineering at Lehigh University. He has served on the board of Dartmouth College’s Thayer School of Engineering, in addition to prestigious panels and advisory boards, including those with the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Science Foundation of Ireland, the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong, and the Science & Engineering Research Council of Singapore.

Dr. Wu is an accomplished scholar in systems engineering and operations research and has published extensively in areas such as game theory, optimization, and high-tech innovations. His research has been supported by the NSF, the U.S. Department of Defense, and Sandia National Laboratories. Dr. Wu’s work in data science has been implemented or tested at firms such as Intel, HP, and IBM. The intellectual property developed from his research was marketed by a third party for licensing. He also worked with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning on large urban planning projects. A Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, Dr. Wu has served as an editor or on the editorial board of numerous journals in his field.

Within nearly four years of his presidency, Dr. Wu was listed among the 50 Top U.S. College and University Presidents, which recognizes the country’s most renowned college and university presidents. He was recognized by City & State with the“2023 50 over 50 Lifetime Achievement Award.” From 2020 to 2024, he was recognized annually in the “Higher Education Power 100,” “Higher Education Power 50,” and “Power of Diversity: Asian 100” lists as a prominent contributor to New York City and State.

Dr. Wu was a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
